The creation of free newspapers provokes a new type of necessity. This new kind of newspapers is generally distributed in the hubs of public and mass transportation, but nobody is in charge of getting rid of the waste once the rags have been read, with the exception of the existing sanitation services. In the network of Renfe Cercanías, giving service to Comunidad de Madrid, 3 tons of these publications are amassed every single day, of which 2/3 are collected on the trains and 1/3 and the stations. Every newspaper is read by two or three people, 2.5 on average. To produce a ton of paper 17 fully grown trees are required; if these figures are similar for the other two main means of transport (buses and underground), the total amount is about more than 150 trees per day only in Madrid. Totem Renfe is a project about the implementation of a furniture element that will help in the reduction of the impact provoked by this phenomenon, providing solutions for the re-use and recycling of these newspapers, as well as the cleaning of the stations and trains.
