Tipology: One week workshop, 15 students Institution: Istituto Europeo di Design, Madrid, www.europeandesignlabs.com Role: Tutor designer Date: March 23-27, 2009
Ciszak Dalmas were invited to coordinate the ‘Re-Use’ workshop as part of the European Design Labs program. The activities included a recycle and reuse proposal using very diverse materials: wood, fabric, various assembled pieces, leftover furniture. The participants of this edition of EDL investigated sustainable design focusing on the main tools of creativity and imagination.
The ‘Object Reanimation Clinic’ workshop explored the possibilities of sustainable design. 120x100x13 cm palettes were used as the repetitive models to create a private workspace on the terrace of the European Design Labs on top the Istituto Europeo di Design modernist building. Participants worked on the re-interpretation of this space, designing and physically building elements of architecture and outdoor furniture. This activity included a recycle and reuse exercise using very diverse materials; wood, fabric, Plexiglas and various wasted objects. This exercise included projection of explanatory videos of how other designers work with re-used materials: Gamper Martino, Max Lamb, Row Edges, Gamplus Fratesi, Peter Marigold, Yell Mer and Erik Bjork, fostering an open debate about the relationship between artisan crafts, design-art and industry. Additionally, students could experience ‘free removal’ of abandoned furniture in person, a service organized by the City Council of Madrid throughout the different neighborhoods one day per month.
